After 34 years of hurt, the curse of Germany has ended. Ever since England beat Germany in the World Cup final of '66, we haven't been able to beat them in competative competition. I have lived through Gazza's tears in Italia '90 and the dreaded penalties of Euro '96. But now, on 17th June 2000, I was left celebrating, oh yes, we beat them! Saturday 17th June 2000 Euro 2000 England 1 - 0 Germany Alan Shearer headed the winning goal in the 53rd minute, which has put England in second place in the Group A table. Now all they need is to draw with Romania on Tuesday to go into the quater finals of the competition, which will see them play already promoted Italy. The result doesn't quite reflect the run of play. Both sides had a number of chances, but it wasn't to be Germany's day. I must admit that the passing of both teams was quite poor and Keegan decided to replace Michael Owen for his Liverpool team mate Steven Gerrard. The young Liverpool midfielder made an immediate impact - his simple passing helped England retain the ball much more effectively. Now Gerrard could be set to start the game against Romania.

Man of The Match Alan Shearer and Paul Scholes were the best players in the England side. Shearer for his goal and Scholes was the best player on the pitch, just like in the first game. He was the only player that seemed to want the ball. |
